A new trailer for Ryan Gosling’s upcoming sci-fi film Project Hail Mary has arrived, showcasing his urgent mission to save Earth as its sun begins to dim.
“I understand the stakes,” Gosling’s character, Doctor Ryland Grace, states in the final trailer for Project Hail Mary. That’s an understatement, as the fate of Earth hangs in the balance throughout this gripping space drama, reminiscent of Interstellar and other modern classics.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because Project Hail Mary is adapted from a novel by Andy Weir, the author of The Martian, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard, who also penned the film starring Matt Damon.
What distinguishes Project Hail Mary is the relationship between Gosling’s character and the alien lifeform named Rocky. The trailer already tugs at the heartstrings, and we anticipate an emotional journey by the time the credits roll next month.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their work on the animated Spider-Verse franchise, the film features Gosling alongside co-stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.
Previous footage from Project Hail Mary has highlighted Gosling’s portrayal of Ryland Grace, a teacher turned scientist tasked with an impossible mission: saving humanity from the impending heat death of the universe as stars, including Earth’s sun, begin to fade.
Here’s the official logline for Project Hail Mary: “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) awakens on a spaceship light-years from home with no memory of who he is or how he arrived. As his memories resurface, he uncovers his mission: to solve the mystery of the substance causing the sun to die. He must rely on his scientific expertise and unconventional ideas to save Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship may mean he doesn’t have to face this challenge alone.”

It remains to be seen if Project Hail Mary will achieve the same acclaim as The Martian, which received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. However, it seems that Amazon MGM is aiming for a prestigious film that can engage both audiences and Academy voters.
