Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Returns to a Beloved Setting

Fire Emblem enthusiasts have been buzzing with excitement ever since the announcement of the latest installment in the beloved RPG series, set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. The anticipation reached a peak during the recent Nintendo Direct, which officially revealed that Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will hit shelves on September 17.

It’s been a long wait for fans, as the last title, Fire Emblem: Engage, came out shortly after the franchise celebrated its 30th anniversary. That game paid homage to the series’ history, featuring nods to classic titles like the original Fire Emblem and the fan-favorite, albeit polarizing, Three Houses.

Fortune’s Weave appears to draw more inspiration from Three Houses than its predecessors. The release date trailer reassures fans that the game will maintain the franchise’s hallmark elements of soldiers, magic, and strategic turn-based combat. However, this time around, players will control four main characters: Cai, Theodora, Dietrich, and Leda, each with their own unique goals and narratives. The story kicks off with the Dagsion Heroic Games, a competition that pits warriors against each other in a Colosseum-style arena, where the victor earns a wish from the Divine Sovereign, a godlike figure presiding over the event.

Previous hints suggested a return to the universe of Three Houses, with glimpses of demonic beasts and weapons featuring crest stones—two significant elements from the Fodlan era. Additionally, characters with the iconic Nabatean traits of green or blonde hair and pointed ears, reminiscent of Three Houses characters like Rhea and Sothis, have been spotted. Sothis herself appears in the reveal trailer, indicating her importance in the unfolding story. She seems to be facing dark forces intent on her demise.

Crucially, the reveal trailer strongly suggests that Fortune’s Weave serves as a prequel to Three Houses. The opening sequence showcases a map of the Dagdan Empire, a largely unexplored continent located southwest of Fodlan, beyond Brigid. While not much is known about Dagda in Three Houses, it is noted for its numerous attempts to conquer Fodlan.

No matter the setting of this next chapter, I—along with countless other Fire Emblem fans—am eager to dive back into another epic, war-torn saga crafted by Intelligent Systems.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is set to launch on September 17 for the Nintendo Switch 2.

But will we remain in Fodlan?
