First Details Unveiled for New Doctor Who Animated Series
A fresh look at a new spinoff from the Doctor Who universe has just been unveiled, and it’s likely not what fans anticipated. Titled Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew, this upcoming animated series aims to “introduce younger audiences to the wonder, adventure, and endless possibilities of the Whoniverse.” It will be available on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer. A sneak peek of the show and its unique art style has been shared.
The series is designed for CBeebies viewers and follows a young Time Lord, the Doctor, along with friends Hannah, Beastie, and Toast-IE as they embark on thrilling adventures through time and space. With the iconic TARDIS as their vessel, they will encounter fantastic creatures, explore amazing new worlds, and face off against classic Doctor Who villains like the Daleks.
Packed with imagination, humor, and adventure, Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew aims to captivate a new generation of fans. Through engaging, preschool-friendly stories, the series promotes curiosity, courage, and kindness, encouraging young viewers to explore new ideas, tackle challenges, and embrace the unexpected.
The show will consist of 52 episodes, each lasting eleven minutes, blending the “wonder and excitement” of Doctor Who with the “trusted storytelling and learning through play values of CBeebies.”
Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew is set to premiere in late 2027 or early 2028 and is currently in production at Blue Zoo Animation Studio, with Dominic Minns as Series Director.
In the meantime, the latest run of Doctor Who was reportedly canceled last year. Ncuti Gatwa took on the role of the fifteenth Doctor from 2023 to 2025, following a legacy of fourteen actors (with David Tennant stepping into the role twice). Disney ended its partnership with the show in late 2025, citing “large budgets” and “poor ratings” as reasons. Insiders suggested that Disney leadership found the show “too woke” for the political climate, a claim that has since lost credibility given the shifting approval ratings.
On June 10, 2026, the BBC announced a significant update regarding the series, revealing that the planned 2026 Christmas episode was scrapped to focus on the next chapter of the story. “This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one-off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory,” the announcement stated.
Most notably, the BBC indicated that the series was “being put out to competitive tender,” allowing various production companies to pitch new ideas. Former showrunner Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf announced their departure from the show around the same time.
While Doctor Who has experienced long breaks between seasons in the past, it has maintained a consistent presence since its revival in 2005. Unfortunately, that streak is coming to an end. The competitive tender process is expected to take years, meaning fans won’t see a new season until at least mid-2028. The deadline for submissions closed on October 1.
