First Game from Pokémon Developer Launches on Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo Switch Online continues to expand its collection of classic titles, with three new NES games making their debut this April. Players can now dive into Game Freak’s first NES title, Mendel Palace, along with the iconic Pac-Man and The Tower of Druaga.
Mendel Palace, known as Quinty in Japan, marks the initial foray of Game Freak, the studio behind the beloved Pokémon series. This puzzle-action game challenges players to flip tiles to push enemies into walls for damage. You take on the role of Bon-Bon, who is on a quest to save his girlfriend, Princess Candy. The game offers both solo and cooperative play options.
Quinty was a significant success for Game Freak, laying the groundwork for the company’s future as a powerhouse in gaming. The game’s art director, Ken Sugimori, even created a series of comics based on Quinty, which are featured in his 2014 art book, Ken Sugimori’s Work – A 25 Year Portfolio from Quinty to Jerry Boy and Pocket Monsters.
Next up is the NES version of Pac-Man, the timeless arcade classic where you munch on pellets while evading ghosts. While it may seem straightforward, mastering the maze-like levels reveals the depth that has made Pac-Man a staple in gaming. Chasing high scores is always a thrilling challenge.
Completing the trio is The Tower of Druaga, an arcade gem from 1984 that gave rise to the now mostly dormant Babylonian Castle Saga. Similar to Pac-Man, players navigate mazes while ascending a tower, facing off against enemies that can take you out in a single hit. Staying alert is crucial as you work your way to defeat the demon Druaga.
Nintendo Switch Online offers a diverse library of NES, Super NES, Game Boy, and Game Boy Color games for just $19.99 a year. For those looking for even more classic content, the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack includes additional titles from systems like the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance for $49.99 a year. Both subscription options enable online play for Switch and Switch 2 games.
