First-Gen AirTags Now Priced at $16: A Smart Buy for Tracking Needs

With the arrival of Apple’s second-gen AirTags, the first-gen models are starting to disappear from shelves. For instance, Amazon has completely sold out of the original AirTag, and it’s uncertain if or when they’ll restock. However, you can still snag a four-pack of the first-gen trackers for about $64, which is a $35 discount, available at various retailers for Presidents Day—just $2 shy of the best price ever. If you’re looking for a single unit, Walmart has them for $17, saving you $12.

For iPhone users, finding a more accurate and useful tracker than Apple’s AirTag is a challenge. Like its successor, the original model connects to Apple’s extensive Find My network and utilizes ultra wideband (UWB) technology. Simply open the Find My app on your device, and follow the on-screen prompts—arrows, sounds, or vibrations—to locate your item, even if it’s wedged between your car seats. This level of accuracy is something many competitors, particularly Tile, struggle to match.

Additionally, AirTags come with a suite of practical software features. You can share the location of an AirTag with up to five people, which is especially useful for families on the go. There’s even the option to temporarily share an AirTag’s location with select airlines, including American Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.

Beyond these software advantages, Apple’s trackers are built to last. The battery can run for up to a year, and when it eventually dies, you can easily replace it with a standard CR2032 cell instead of buying a new tracker. Each AirTag also boasts an IP67 rating, making it resistant to dust and light rain.

While opting for the last-gen AirTag means missing out on some features of the newer model—like an enhanced UWB chip for more precise tracking, extended range, and a speaker that’s 50% louder—the original still stands as one of the top trackers available. It’s definitely worth considering while supplies last.
