First Look: Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler Gear Up for Miami Vice Reboot
The gaming community is buzzing with anticipation as the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 draws near. Rockstar is bringing the series back to Vice City, a vibrant, Miami-inspired locale. But there’s another thrilling take on Miami to keep an eye on besides GTA 6. Recently, a sneak peek of the upcoming Miami Vice reboot was unveiled, showcasing Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in this period crime drama.
Titled Miami Vice ’85, this reboot was first announced last April. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick and F1, the film features a script penned by Dan Gilroy, the mind behind Nightcrawler and Kong: Skull Island. Jordan and Butler will portray undercover detectives Tubbs and Crockett, respectively.
The first look shared on social media confirms that production for Miami Vice ’85 is in full swing, with a release date set for May 19, 2028. The film boasts a strong supporting cast, including Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland, and Michael Irby.
Miami Vice originally made its mark as a groundbreaking television series that aired on NBC from 1984 to 1989, created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive-produced by Michael Mann. Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson were the original Tubbs and Crockett, respectively, and the series significantly influenced Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Mann revisited the Miami Vice concept in 2006 with a contemporary film adaptation featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as Tubbs and Crockett. In contrast, Kosinski’s reboot aims to recapture the essence of ’80s Miami, promising stylish suits and a vibrant neon aesthetic, as hinted in the first look.
