First Trailer for Madden Movie Features Unrecognizable Nic Cage and Christian Bale

Nicolas Cage is back in action! The versatile actor takes center stage in a new biopic that chronicles the life of John Madden, the legendary football coach and commentator who became synonymous with one of the most successful video game franchises in history. The first trailer has just dropped, showcasing Cage’s remarkable transformation into the iconic figure.

The film will explore the key phases of Madden’s life: his coaching tenure, his role as a commentator, and his significant contributions to the Madden video game series. As highlighted in the trailer, Madden is often hailed as one of the greatest NFL coaches ever, boasting the highest winning percentage among coaches with at least 100 games under their belt—112 wins, 39 losses, and seven ties, translating to a 73.1% win rate. He led the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978, guiding them to their first Super Bowl victory in January 1977. Madden stepped away from coaching in 1979 due to health concerns and burnout.

Shortly thereafter, he joined CBS as a color commentator for NFL broadcasts, where he thrived, earning 16 Sports Emmy Awards. Known for his ability to break down complex football concepts into easily understandable terms, he played a crucial role in broadening the sport’s appeal. His commentary was often peppered with humorous anecdotes, like the time he uncovered a hot dog conspiracy during a 1995 Seahawks preseason game.

While his coaching and commentary careers were impressive, Madden is perhaps best recognized for his association with EA’s video game series. He not only provided his name and likeness but also contributed his extensive football knowledge, earning a credit as a designer on the original John Madden Football, which launched in 1988.

In addition to Cage, the film features Christian Bale as Al Davis, Kathryn Hahn as Virginia Madden, and John Mulaney as Trip Hawkins. Directed by David O. Russell, known for his work on acclaimed films like Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, the project has garnered attention for both its star-studded cast and some controversy surrounding Russell’s on-set behavior. Reports indicate that several cast members walked off during filming due to his alleged use of inappropriate language. The film will also include comedian Shane Gillis, who faced backlash for past remarks that led to his departure from Saturday Night Live.

Mark your calendars: the film is set to premiere on Prime Video on November 18, 2026. Get ready for a wild ride!
