Five-Year Mystery in Attack on Titan Finally Uncovered

Fans of Attack on Titan are in for a treat with the upcoming rerelease that finally reveals what became of Mikasa Ackerman five years after the conclusion of Hajime Isayama’s acclaimed manga.

This January, the 145-minute theatrical compilation film, Attack on Titan: The Final Chapter – The Last Attack, will hit theaters, combining the final two episodes of the series. More importantly, it addresses a lingering question that has puzzled fans since the two-part finale aired in 2023, one that the original manga left unanswered: What happened to Mikasa Ackerman?

The series finale left several plot threads unresolved, including Mikasa’s marital status. Many fans speculated that she ended up with Jean after the Rumbling, but this was never confirmed—until now. Following a screening, a fan shared insights from the compilation film’s new post-credits scene, which depicts Mikasa and Jean visiting a grave with a child. Years later, they return with their children and grandchildren, confirming their long-lasting marriage.

It’s reasonable to assume that Mikasa and Jean are visiting Eren’s grave, adding emotional depth to the scene when reflecting on Mikasa and Eren’s complex relationship. Mikasa harbored feelings for Eren since childhood, but Eren’s transformation into a Titan and his role in the devastation of much of humanity forced Mikasa into a heartbreaking decision—she ultimately killed him to prevent the Rumbling, later burying his head beneath a tree in their hometown.

The original manga may have avoided confirming Mikasa and Jean’s marriage to honor the love that Mikasa lost with Eren. While Jean’s feelings for Mikasa were evident, they remained largely unexplored due to her deep connection with Eren. Even after she took Eren’s life, the manga depicted her reminiscing about their shared memories. Hints of her future with Jean were present, but both the manga and anime only showed Jean from behind, leaving fans uncertain about his identity.
