Florida Bans Flock Cameras on State Highways

Florida is taking a stand against Flock cameras and other automated license plate readers on state highways. The Florida Department of Transportation announced on Monday that it will revoke permits for all license plate readers, requiring their removal from highways within 30 days.

The decision comes in light of a significant rise in the deployment of these cameras, alongside troubling reports of misuse, data privacy issues, and surveillance concerns. The agency is also putting a stop to any future requests for installing license plate readers on state roads.

This action follows recent comments from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who expressed that the situation with Flock cameras has become “out of control.” Similarly, Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently halted state funding for Flock cameras amid growing backlash. Communities like Lansing, Michigan; Tempe, Arizona; and Knox County, Tennessee, have also terminated their contracts with Flock cameras.
