Florida Initiates Inquiry into OpenAI
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is initiating an investigation into OpenAI, focusing on potential public safety and national security concerns. In a statement, Uthmeier expressed worries that OpenAI’s data and technology might be accessed by adversaries, including the Chinese Communist Party.
He highlighted that OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been associated with criminal activities, particularly in relation to child sexual abuse material and the promotion of self-harm. Uthmeier also mentioned that ChatGPT may have been utilized by the individual suspected of a shooting at Florida State University in April 2025. Recently, the family of a victim from that incident filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the suspect maintained “constant communication with ChatGPT.”
As OpenAI prepares for an initial public offering (IPO) this year, it is under increased scrutiny from regulators regarding its approach to child safety. Last October, the Federal Trade Commission mandated that OpenAI and other tech companies provide information on how they evaluate the impact of their chatbots on children.
“AI should exist to supplement, support, and advance mankind, not lead to an existential crisis or our ultimate demise,” Uthmeier stated. He emphasized that as Big Tech introduces these technologies, they must prioritize safety and security. Uthmeier also indicated that subpoenas related to the investigation are on the way.
