Forget about a Final Fantasy 6 remake; the creator of FF7 is setting sights on new horizons.
While fans are eagerly anticipating a remake of Final Fantasy 6, it seems that the team behind Final Fantasy 7 Revelation isn’t planning to tackle that project next. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has expressed a lack of interest in leading a Final Fantasy 6 remake.
This insight came during a recent interview where Hamaguchi discussed the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. He acknowledged the strong desire from fans for a Final Fantasy 6 remake but indicated that he doesn’t feel personally drawn to that direction.
“I do see a lot of fans and community asking me to take on the helm for a FF6 remake,” he shared. “So, I’m seeing a lot of that floating online, but, you know, a Final Fantasy 6 Remake or any other remake, it could be me, or it could be someone else. Personally, I think that it might be in better hands if it went to another creator in Square Enix.”
Given that the last decade of his career has been dedicated to reimagining an existing title, it’s understandable that Hamaguchi would prefer to explore new creative avenues after completing Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. He mentioned that he intends to remain within the JRPG genre for his next project.
“In terms of what I personally want to do, obviously, I think my next creative work is also going to be a JRPG,” Hamaguchi explained. “When you look at all the other titles that we have released at Square Enix, not just the FF7 Remake series, I think Square Enix, as a brand, as a company, is more than capable of delivering this grand-scale RPG that could resonate with gamers across the world. Fans might have a lot of different expectations, but for me personally, I do want to take on this new challenge with another RPG title after this, whether it be Final Fantasy or a different IP.”
For now, Hamaguchi’s next steps remain uncertain, as development on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is still ongoing. The game is set to launch for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X in spring 2027.
