To keep things interesting, you don’t just get to pick any player from any era. Instead, the game randomly assigns you a team and a time period, and you select one player from that combination. For instance, if you draw the Knicks from the 2020s, you might choose Jalen Brunson as your point guard, and then you’ll get a new team and era to find your center.

You have the option to reshuffle both the team and the era once if you’re not satisfied with your choices. This adds a layer of strategy, as you’ll need to decide when to settle for what you have and when to gamble for something better. Domantas Sabonis is a solid pick, but do you stick with him or take a chance on another Kings player, hoping to land Wilt Chamberlain in a later round?

There’s also a HoopIQ mode that removes all stats, challenging you to rely solely on your basketball knowledge to achieve a perfect season. Even with the stats available, it’s no easy feat; my best score was 78-4. Plus, there are other variations popping up, like SixRings from databallr, though that one has been a bit hit or miss for me.
