Former Bethesda Developer Highlights the Intense Pressure Surrounding Elder Scrolls 6
Nate Purkeypile, a former lead artist at Bethesda, recently shared his thoughts on The Elder Scrolls 6, shedding light on the reasons behind its early announcement and his hopes for the game’s direction. In a conversation, he speculated that Bethesda revealed The Elder Scrolls 6 back in 2018 because it had been quite a while since Skyrim, and the studio wanted to reassure fans that a new installment was on the way. He noted that without this announcement, fans might have felt frustrated with the long wait. Purkeypile pointed out that announcing the game early was a costly move, as producing trailers isn’t cheap. He mentioned that many studios opt for early announcements as a way to attract talent. Bethesda’s Todd Howard has expressed some uncertainty about whether the early reveal was the right decision.
Purkeypile believes that the release of The Elder Scrolls 6 will take time due to the immense pressure on the studio to deliver a quality product. He emphasized that while there may be less pressure to meet a specific release date, there is a greater need to ensure the game meets high standards, which he views as a positive approach, provided the team is kept informed about these expectations.
When asked if Bethesda might hold back details about The Elder Scrolls 6 until after the launch of another major title, he dismissed the idea. He acknowledged that while there could be some overlap in the audience for both games, he feels Bethesda will be focused on their unique vision since the two titles are quite different.
Purkeypile also expressed his desire for The Elder Scrolls 6 to have a more focused setting compared to Starfield, which allowed players to explore a vast array of locations. He hopes the game will concentrate on a single region of Tamriel, as he found the expansive scope of Starfield less engaging. Additionally, he is eager to see Bethesda introduce innovative concepts in The Elder Scrolls 6, such as new gameplay systems or unique mechanics. He mused about the possibilities beyond Tamriel, wondering what other lands or features might exist in the game’s universe.
Having spent 13 years at Bethesda, contributing to iconic titles like Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Fallout 4, Purkeypile left the studio in 2021 to establish his own independent game company, Just Purkey Games. He has since released titles like The Axis Unseen and Deedlee Doo Carkour. Currently, the majority of Bethesda Game Studios is focused on The Elder Scrolls 6, which is still without a confirmed release date.
