Former D&D Veteran to Lead Critical Role’s Upcoming Campaign
Gen Con has truly outdone itself this year, showcasing major announcements from various creators about upcoming projects that span from World of Warcraft to Star Wars. Regardless of the tabletop system you enjoy or plan to dive into, there’s a wave of exciting content on the horizon for players.
Fans of Critical Role, the leading actual-play group in the tabletop gaming scene, have something special to look forward to. Darrington Press, their publishing branch, not only impressed with future plans for Daggerheart, including new accessories, but also revealed collaborative projects with Roll & Play Press and Foundry Virtual Tabletop. However, the highlight was the announcement of a brand-new Critical Role campaign that caught our attention.
Reign of the Weredragon is an upcoming actual-play miniseries set in the Daggerheart universe, blending elements from classic fairy tales with a uniquely eerie atmosphere. While the cast remains under wraps, we do know that Chris Perkins, the creative director of Darrington Press and a veteran Dungeons & Dragons designer, will be leading the series.
Perkins brings a wealth of experience as a game master, having previously served as the Dungeon Master for Wizards of the Coast’s official actual play show, Dice, Camera, Action, as well as the long-running Acquisitions Incorporated alongside Penny Arcade’s Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik. He co-created Reign of the Weredragon as part of Daggerheart’s first expansion, Hope & Fear, making this new actual play series an ideal way to showcase the product to both viewers and players.
Critical Role boasts a diverse lineup of shows featuring numerous campaigns and miniseries. Age of Umbra: Sallowlands—a gothic and chilling Daggerheart adventure featuring notable talents like Abubakar Salim and Jennifer English—will continue airing until mid-August. As of now, the release date for Reign of the Weredragon hasn’t been announced, but it’s expected to run alongside Critical Role’s main campaign, which utilizes the D&D system.
In the meantime, fans have plenty of content to enjoy while waiting for Reign of the Weredragon. The next episode of Age of Umbra: Sallowlands will drop on Twitch, YouTube, and Beacon.tv at 7 p.m. PDT, with Campaign 4 set to return on August 27.
