Fortnite Introduces a Unique Twist on Obsession
With the horror thriller craze sweeping the box office and capturing the cultural spotlight, it was only a matter of time before we saw a collaboration with Fortnite. That crossover has finally arrived, and it’s probably not what you’d expect.
Spoilers ahead: it’s an edit of the Obsession trailer where a rare collectible Fortnite sprite takes the place of Nikki in all her usual scenes. This quirky crossover humorously highlights the obsession players have with sprites, which are essentially Fortnite’s take on Pokémon. Sprites come in various rarities, from gold to holofoil, reminiscent of trading card games. However, instead of battling, these sprites grant players unique abilities.
Sprites have made appearances in the game before, but this new twist has been so popular that some players have adopted a strict routine to collect more sprites and earn the related currencies.
While the edit is clever, it’s also a bit of a letdown. Instead of this, we could have seen a skin for Twitch streamer and Obsession star Inde Navarette, or her co-star Michael Johnston. Just picture Freaky Nikki running around with an ax, screaming, “No, no, no, don’t do that!” She could have had an emote where she breaks a One Wish Willow or one featuring her iconic uncanny makeup from the film. The potential for virality would have been massive, with players flocking to embody Nikki, similar to the popularity of girly-pop skins like Sabrina Carpenter.
There’s a chance we might see a collaboration like that in the future. For now, this trailer mainly serves to promote the fact that Obsession is available for streaming, just in case you’re one of the few who hasn’t caught one of the year’s biggest films yet.
