Fortnite Welcomes The Odyssey Adventure

The legendary hero Odysseus has faced countless trials in his epic journey, battling cyclopes, witches, and the fearsome sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis. Now, he’s gearing up for his toughest challenge yet: Fortnite. Epic Games has revealed that Odysseus will be making his debut in the battle royale this week to coincide with the release of Christopher Nolan’s film, The Odyssey.

The announcement came via the official FortniteX account on July 15, featuring a teaser that showcases a digital version of Matt Damon as Odysseus, navigating through environments reminiscent of ancient Greece. The teaser even recreates iconic scenes, like Odysseus and his crew entering Polyphemus’ cave, along with a shot of him adrift at sea—poor guy just can’t catch a break. More details about this crossover are expected to drop later this week, likely coinciding with the film’s release on Friday.

This isn’t the first time Nolan’s Odyssey has crossed into the gaming world. Earlier in July, a free mode themed around the movie was announced for Roblox. Nolan has surprisingly embraced video games over the years, which might be unexpected for a director known for his commitment to the cinematic experience. The second trailer for his underrated film Tenet premiered in Fortnite on May 21, 2020, and later that year, Epic Games hosted a movie night event where players could watch a selection of Nolan’s films live in-game, including Batman Begins, Inception, and The Prestige.

The Odyssey marks Nolan’s first film since the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer was released in 2023. Matt Damon stars alongside a stellar cast featuring familiar faces like Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Himesh Patel, and Elliot Page, as well as newcomers Tom Holland, who plays Odysseus’ son Telemachus, and Zendaya, both making their first appearances in a Nolan film.

The Odyssey hits theaters on July 17.
