Forza Horizon 6 Embraces Anime Vibes with Initial D-Inspired Nighttime Touge Battles and a Massive Gundam Feature

Forza Horizon 6 is set to take players on an exhilarating journey through Japan, and the gameplay reveal showcased at the recent Xbox Developer Direct was packed with real-world inspirations, all while channeling a vibrant anime aesthetic. The brief glimpse of the nighttime Touge Battle mode felt like a direct nod to Initial D, culminating in a striking image of a full-sized Gundam.

It was a given that an open-world racing game set in Japan would draw from Initial D. This iconic anime and manga series revolves around street racing, particularly the thrilling one-on-one battles on treacherous mountain roads at night, which popularized drift racing and Touge battles among mainstream audiences. Just picture a small car navigating a Japanese mountain pass, and you can almost hear the Eurobeat soundtrack kick in.

Playground Games has confirmed that Forza Horizon 6 will feature a dedicated Touge Battle mode. While details are still under wraps, the developers mentioned that players can expect “iconic nighttime races down Japanese mountain passes.” To drive the point home, the gameplay footage prominently features a Toyota AE86, the legendary car synonymous with the anime.

While it’s fitting to pay homage to a beloved racing series, the real surprise came at the end of the gameplay breakdown. A car is seen on a weathered stretch of road, and as the camera pulls back, we catch a glimpse of what appears to be the feet of a massive Gundam looming behind.

This could very well be the introduction to a Showcase event, a staple in previous entries of the series. Typically, these events have players racing against trains, planes, or other unique vehicles, but a giant robot certainly takes it to a whole new level. The burning question, though, is whether this is an officially licensed Gundam. The color scheme and overall design of the legs resemble various iconic robots from the franchise, but they don’t match any specific model—especially with those oversized wheels integrated into the feet.

Forza Horizon has always embraced a fun and lighthearted approach to racing, and it looks like the sixth installment will continue that tradition. With these anime references making waves in the marketing, I can’t help but wonder what other hidden gems and Easter eggs await players in the full game.

Forza Horizon 6 promises to be the ultimate open-world racing experience, and Playground’s vibe check has me sold: “It really is just about driving wherever you want and exploring.”
