Fourth Wing Author Unveils Four New Characters for Upcoming Novel

Threshing Day is the upcoming installment in Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean series. This novella will delve into the threshing day experiences of 13 characters from the Fourth Wing books. Although the release is just around the corner, details have been scarce since the announcement came just a few months prior. Fortunately, Yarros has started to quench our curiosity by revealing which characters will feature in Threshing Day.

In their first year at Basgiath War College, rider cadets must confront threshing, the pivotal day when they bond with a dragon. Failure to succeed means either repeating the year or facing dire consequences. The pressure of meeting a dragon can be overwhelming, leading many to panic and miss their chance. Those who succeed gain a lifelong companion and the opportunity to become riders. Violet, for instance, bonded with Tairn and Andarna during her threshing. With Threshing Day on the horizon, fans are eager to learn how other characters from Fourth Wing fared.

Until recently, the specific characters featured in Threshing Day were a mystery. This week, Yarros has been sharing quotes from each story on social media, inviting fans to guess which dragon might have spoken them. The following day, she reveals the character behind each quote, gradually unveiling the cast of Threshing Day.

The chapter featuring Xaden and Sgaeyl’s threshing day was disclosed alongside the book’s announcement on July 15. Yarros noted that Xaden’s perspective will be available for free on her website, leaving it uncertain whether he will be included in the 13 character stories or if it will be a bonus scene like in previous installments.

So far, Yarros has confirmed the presence of four riders and their dragons. The latest quote shared is: “If I am five, then you are four.” Fans speculate that Aotrom said this to Ridoc, as these characters are known for their comedic interactions in the series. More details will emerge when Threshing Day launches on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

Fans of the Empyrean series have plenty to anticipate while they await the release of book four.
