Fox is set to take over your Roku experience.

The entertainment and broadcasting landscape is shifting once again. Fox Corp is set to acquire Roku in a massive $22 billion deal, granting the media giant access to Roku’s impressive 100 million household install base. Once the deal wraps up, Fox shareholders will hold about 73% of the company, with the transaction expected to finalize in the first half of 2027. Roku stands as the leader in the U.S. connected TV device market, providing hardware that allows users to stream platforms like Netflix. This acquisition seems to be a strategic move for Fox to counteract the trend of cord-cutting, particularly among younger audiences.

Founded in 2002, Roku made waves by launching the first connected TV device capable of streaming Netflix in 2008. Since then, it has primarily generated revenue through advertising and channel subscriptions, projecting around $4.74 billion in revenue for 2025.

With this acquisition, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Fox prioritize its own content, such as Fox Sports and Fox News, potentially reaching nearly a third of Americans with its programming.

In 2023, Fox News settled with Dominion Voting Systems for nearly $800 million to avoid a trial over its controversial coverage of the 2020 presidential election, where it promoted unfounded conspiracy theories regarding Dominion’s voting machines. Despite this financial hit, Lachlan Murdoch’s media empire appears poised to continue making significant acquisitions.

Consolidation and large-scale mergers have become commonplace in the media industry. Paramount Skydance is currently working on acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery for approximately $111 billion. Interestingly, Paramount is now owned by a family with connections to the Trump administration, raising eyebrows about the timing of these moves while they have a favorable ally in the White House. On June 12, the U.S. Department of Justice approved Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros., bringing the company closer to finalizing the deal.
