Friday the 13th TV Series Promises a Paranoid 70s Thriller Vibe with Plenty of Gore: “Expect Rivers of Blood”

The chilling saga of the Voorhees family is set to make its way to the small screen with “Crystal Lake,” a prequel series to the iconic Friday the 13th franchise, helmed by Brad Caleb Kane, known for his work on IT: Welcome to Derry. This new series will spotlight Linda Cardellini as a young Pamela Voorhees, the original killer from the franchise, which is a crucial piece of trivia for any horror aficionado.

While the specifics of Cardellini’s portrayal and the overall plot remain under wraps, Kane has hinted that viewers can expect a wild ride. “In many ways, it’s a psychological thriller. It’s a paranoid ’70s thriller,” he shared in a recent interview. “It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”

Kane also emphasizes that “Crystal Lake” will delve into the historical context surrounding these sinister events. “I tried to think about Crystal Lake and a Friday the 13th prequel as, ‘What era did the first movie come out of?'” he explained. “It came out of the paranoid ’70s thriller era. It came out of the mistrust-of-institutions era. It came out of the women’s lib era, the National Organization for Women era, this consciousness-raising awakening era in America. I wanted to go and play with all of those themes.”

Joining Cardellini in this terrifying journey are William Catlett as Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks, Cameron Scoggins as Dorf, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace. With the rich backstory of the Voorhees family, Pamela is set to be a pivotal character, and Kane assures that Cardellini’s performance will be one to remember. “She’s gonna shock and surprise a lot of people. I think she’s gonna get a lot of attention for this role. She’s inconceivably brilliant in it. I can’t really say any more.”

While a release date for the series is still pending, fans will have to be patient before they can explore the dark depths of Crystal Lake.
