Frieren Returns, But What Happened to the Official Hyperkin Accessories for Nintendo Switch?
A year ago, Hyperkin unveiled plans for a line of eye-catching Nintendo Switch accessories inspired by the beloved anime, Frieren Beyond Journey’s End. Fast forward to now, and while the anime has kicked off its second season, those accessories are still MIA.
Initially showcased on Hyperkin’s social media in January 2025, the lineup included a pair of striking Nintendo Switch controllers and cases adorned with official artwork featuring the enchanting white-haired elf mage. Even though the original Switch was nearing the end of its lifecycle when these were announced, I was excited at the prospect of expressing my love for Frieren through my handheld. Unfortunately, they have yet to materialize in stores or online, and the original announcement post has vanished.
Visiting the social media page for this collaboration now leads to a “this page doesn’t exist” error, which is a letdown. A bit of digging revealed that a Twitter user named dischapo noticed the missing post and inquired about it on February 13, 2025, asking, “What happened to the Frieren controller you guys announced at CES? Tweet is gone.”
In response, the Chief Creative Marketing Officer at Hyperkin Inc. mentioned that “More information will be coming out soon for the Frieren Pixel Art,” but since then, there’s been radio silence from Hyperkin—definitely not what fans like me want to hear. This Frieren x Hyperkin collaboration stemmed from a partnership with Crunchyroll, the popular anime streaming service where you can catch the entire first season and the early episodes of the new season of Frieren. It was anticipated to be the first of many anime-themed accessories, given Crunchyroll’s extensive library that includes titles like Chainsaw Man and the Apothecary Diaries.
At the time of the reveal, no additional details were provided, even though they promised more would come later. Instead, Hyperkin’s social media team let the stunning visuals do the talking, showcasing beautiful art that perfectly captured the essence of the series. The controllers appeared to be re-skinned versions of Hyperkin’s Pixel Art controllers, featuring a pale green chassis that harmonized beautifully with the white, green, and light purple tones of the artwork.
One controller depicted Frieren mid-spell, while the other showed her playfully surrounded by flowers. If these were indeed Pixel Art re-skins, they would have included Bluetooth functionality and compatibility with the Switch, Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android devices. The same artwork adorned the Switch cases, which I was particularly eager to own—at least until the Nintendo Switch 2 was announced.
The arrival of the new Switch 2 has me wondering if that’s the reason we haven’t seen these Frieren accessories hit the market yet. They were announced just five months before the new handheld was revealed, and it’s likely that Hyperkin and Crunchyroll would prefer to revisit the design to ensure broader compatibility.
If that’s the case, I’m all for it. I’d love to have some official Frieren accessories for the Switch 2, even if there’s no game to pair with them. I’ve reached out to Hyperkin’s PR team to clarify whether these anime accessories are still in development. If I hear back, I’ll be sure to update this for all you fellow Frieren fans out there.
In the meantime, if you’re looking for something to tide you over, the Hyperkin Oscar Mayer Edition Pixel Art controller is available for $19.99 on Amazon, perfect for those who love hotdogs as much as they love Frieren.
