Gambit from X-Men Receives a New Moniker
Since his introduction in 1990, the mutant Remy LeBeau has primarily gone by the name Gambit—until now. In the latest issue of Uncanny X-Men, Remy has adopted a new moniker: Wyvern, all while facing an alien invasion.
The name might seem a bit off considering Remy’s abilities to generate and control kinetic energy, typically showcased through his iconic playing cards and staff. So, what’s the deal with the dragon-themed codename? In a previous storyline, Gambit swiped The Left Eye of Agamotto from the dragon Sadurang, who ominously warned him that there would be consequences. Later, it was revealed that Gambit would eventually lose his sanity and become a cannibalistic monster. While he gained some impressive new powers, the drawbacks were significant.
Fast forward to the latest issue. During the alien onslaught, Gambit undergoes a dramatic transformation. Initially, he sprouts draconic wings and a tail, but soon he evolves even further, taking on a nearly full dragon form. Although he can still speak, he’s clearly in a chaotic, monstrous state, hence the new name Wyvern.
Once the alien threat is dealt with, Rogue suggests that she and Remy should leave their group of young allies to seek assistance. It’s Remy who proposes they find an exorcist, paving the way for the introduction of a new character named Repent, who has been teased in promotional material as the X-orcist. Clever twist there.
It remains uncertain whether Repent is a friend or foe, or even a mutant. Artwork shows him wielding light constructs, tying into his religious themes and the title of The Harbinger of Demons. Just when you thought Remy had too many names, Repent is set to become his potential savior, with hints that he aims to “free an X-Man from what he believes is a homicidal possession.” With a plan to lift Remy’s draconic curse, it seems the name Wyvern might not stick around for long.
Gambit is also set to make another appearance on the big screen later this year, with Channing Tatum reprising his role in an upcoming film. It’s unlikely that this version of Gambit will undergo such drastic changes, as the character is just beginning his journey in the cinematic universe.
