Game of Thrones Actor Reveals Marvel Never Contacted Him for Midnight Sons Film

Among the many post-credits scene teases in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one film stands out for its lack of follow-through: 2021’s Eternals. The conclusion of this movie hinted at significant expansions within the MCU, including the introduction of Harry Styles as Eros, Thanos’ brother, along with brief glimpses of Mahershala Ali’s Blade and Kit Harington’s Black Knight. There was also the colossal Celestial lurking in the Indian Ocean, which was somewhat addressed in last year’s Captain America: Brave New World.

In light of Blade’s cancellation—at least with Ali in the lead role—and the announcement of Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider film, another rumored Marvel project is coming into focus: Midnight Sons. Despite the groundwork laid for various members of this supernatural superhero team across different live-action projects, Harington, who portrays one of the characters, revealed that he was never approached by Marvel Studios regarding a film.

As Blade faced numerous delays and setbacks, speculation arose that Marvel Studios was pivoting towards a larger project, uniting various supernatural and monstrous characters to form the Midnight Sons. This team first appeared in Marvel comics in the early ’90s, featuring heroes like Blade, Ghost Rider, and Morbius. Several members of the Midnight Sons have already been introduced in the MCU, including Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, Wong, and Elsa Bloodstone. Harington’s Dane Whitman, aka the Black Knight, was a potential candidate to join forces with Ali’s Blade.

In a conversation with Harington, the actor known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Industry shared that he had never been contacted by Marvel Studios about participating in such a project. He mentioned to the host of a podcast that “Nothing solid [was] ever communicated” regarding a team film featuring his character.

“They’ll throw a character in and see if it goes anywhere,” Harington remarked about his role in Eternals. “And in the end it didn’t.”

However, he expressed that Whitman is “a really interesting character” and seemed open to the idea of reprising the role in the future. “There’s something fascinating to play with the Black Knight: the Ebony Blade is [what] he uses and then gets bloodlust,” Harington noted. “There’s an interesting story of someone going from hero to villain there. So yeah, anyone from Marvel watching… I do think it could be a fascinating story but they have so much.”

Harington isn’t the only actor to comment on the potential Midnight Sons movie. In a previous episode of the same podcast, Moon Knight actor Oscar Isaac touched on the rumors surrounding the project but remained non-committal.

“Yeah, there was interesting talk about Midnight Sons,” Isaac said. “Tonally, it’s really important because we’re playing with real stuff with that one. It’s expressing something very real, challenging, and difficult. I feel like … you gotta take it seriously as well. Even though it’s a crazy comic book, that’s what it’s trying to do, it’s doing both of those things.”

For now, Marvel fans will have to make do with the next best thing: the video game Marvel’s Midnight Suns, an underrated 2022 release that combined XCOM-style tactics with a darker roster of Marvel superheroes.

Alas, Dane Whitman, we hardly knew ye.
