Game Pass to Limit Monthly Cloud Streaming Hours, Impacting Only 4% of Users
Currently, cloud streaming through Xbox Game Pass is unlimited, but that will change in November. Microsoft plans to implement monthly usage caps for cloud gaming, even for those with the highest-tier subscriptions. The company noted that only a small fraction of users are heavily utilizing this feature, estimating that the change will affect just 4% of Game Pass subscribers.
Starting in November, new limits for xCloud will be introduced for each Game Pass tier.
Additionally, Microsoft will offer players the option to pay for cloud gaming by the hour, even if they don’t hold a Game Pass subscription, although the pricing details are yet to be revealed. This metering approach seems logical; it prevents Game Pass subscribers who rarely use cloud gaming from subsidizing those who rely on it heavily. However, it’s worth noting that this adjustment doesn’t come with a reduction in Game Pass pricing for those who don’t use the service as much. Essentially, users are losing a benefit while costs remain unchanged.
Microsoft explained in a blog post, “We’re introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer. Moving to monthly limits allows us to keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance. We understand that for some players the practical result is a higher cost. In November, we’ll provide more information about pricing, purchasing additional hours, eligible games, market availability, and how players can check their remaining time.”
Meanwhile, Microsoft has begun testing a free, ad-supported tier of cloud gaming.
