Gameplay Reveal for State of Decay 3 Finally Unveiled

In April, Undead Labs opened the door for fans to sign up for a public playtest of their co-op zombie survival game, State of Decay 3. During the recent Xbox showcase, while no specific dates for the playtest were revealed, it was confirmed that the game is set to launch in 2027, accompanied by a new gameplay trailer that has players buzzing with excitement.

Creative director Kevin Patzelt shared that everything showcased in the trailer was actual gameplay from State of Decay 3. The footage featured a horde of zombies, an array of weapons, and fortified human settlements—elements that players can look forward to experiencing during the upcoming playtests. The playtest will support four-player co-op gameplay and introduce new base-building mechanics and resource management strategies. For those who miss out on the initial playtests, there will still be opportunities to join future alpha tests, as Undead Labs plans to keep a record of all sign-ups.

If it seems like development on State of Decay has been slow, it’s because Undead Labs has been busy rolling out updates for State of Decay 2. While progress on State of Decay 3 has been ongoing, the studio is now ramping up development efforts.

To shape State of Decay 3, Undead Labs has been actively gathering player feedback from online discussions and watching gameplay on livestreams and YouTube. This approach aims to better understand what resonates with players and how to tackle any issues in the sequel.

Before the Xbox showcase, the game was primarily presented through concept art and brief over-the-shoulder glimpses of a development build. The project also faced some controversy when a developer admitted that the announcement trailer for State of Decay 3 didn’t accurately represent the game, as it was still in its infancy at that time. Reports suggested that there was pressure from Microsoft to showcase the game earlier than planned.

When State of Decay 3 was first revealed in 2020, it lacked a dedicated team or even a prototype.
