Gamers Discover Hidden Veronica Easter Eggs in Resident Evil Requiem

Rumors about a potential remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica have been circulating since before the launch of Resident Evil Requiem. Now that players have had a chance to dive into its world, they’re uncovering some intriguing Easter eggs that might lend weight to these speculations. A discussion in the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit highlights a couple of these clues. One notable find is a wine bottle labeled “Avernico,” which is an anagram for Veronica. Another clue is a guest named Veronica listed in the registry at the Wrenwood Hotel.

In the bar lounge of Rhodes Hill, there’s a curious bottle labeled AVERNICO. Unscramble it, and you get… VERONICA. What could this mean for the future of Resident Evil? ????

Thanks to the photo mode, the Wrenwood hotel register is clearer, revealing that Alyssa wasn’t just the last guest but also the “9th,” which aligns with the title’s number. Plus, one guest’s name is “Veronica,” adding to the growing list of references to Code: Veronica in RE9.

Another viral post showcases a set of wooden toy blocks in Resident Evil Requiem that display the letters “C,” “N” (or “Z” on its side), “1,” and “6” or “9.” Players are theorizing these could reference Code: Veronica, Resident Evil Zero, the original Resident Evil (often called RE1), and either Resident Evil 6 or Requiem itself, the ninth mainline entry in the series. Fans are buzzing with speculation that Code: Veronica, RE0, RE1, and possibly RE6 could be next on the remake roster.

There are references everywhere!

While it might seem a stretch to read too much into a few toy blocks, the Reddit post notes that Capcom has a history of embedding hints about future games in Resident Evil titles. A thread on X outlines some examples:

(1/6) Let me show you how Resident Evil games in the RE Engine era often drop little hints about what’s coming next. In RE7, there are two notable hints. The first is the old woman/Mother Miranda painting in Lucas’ “Happy Birthday” puzzle.

(3/6) In Resident Evil Village, on Karl Heisenberg’s conspiracy wall, there’s a picture of an early version of Dr. Victor Gideon, who we now know is the main villain of Resident Evil Requiem.

(5/6) Sometimes Capcom is quite cheeky, like in the “10 Million Sales” video for Resident Evil: 4 Remake, where they updated a sign in the Village to form “IX” while framing Leon, with the lyrics “ON THE ROAD AHEAD” blaring as it appears.

(7/8) Speaking of that, Leon’s license plate in RE9 isn’t a nod to a future project. The numbers 9642 represent all the main games Leon has starred in, and ND stands for Requiem’s development codename, “New Dawn.”

However, some Redditors have pointed out that the name “Veronica Galibardi” in the hotel registry likely refers to a real person involved in the Italian localization of Resident Evil Requiem. Other names in the registry also correspond to individuals who worked on the game’s localization. This registry Easter egg seems to be debunked, and the toy blocks might be a bit of a stretch too, but the wine bottle remains an intriguing find. It could simply be a casual reference, but with multiple sources hinting at a Code: Veronica remake, the fanbase is eager to latch onto any new evidence.

Capcom has been on a remake spree with the Resident Evil series over the past five years, releasing remakes of Resident Evil 2 in 2019, Resident Evil 3 in 2020, and Resident Evil 4 in 2023. Alongside the HD remaster of Resident Evil in 2015, this makes Code: Veronica the oldest mainline game in the series that hasn’t been remade or significantly updated. It seems logical for Code: Veronica to be next in line for a remake, even if the evidence remains somewhat tenuous.
