Gamescom Issues Apology for Inadequate Response to Indie Booth Thefts: “We Regret Our Actions”
After facing significant backlash for its initial handling of theft incidents at Gamescom 2026, the event organizers have issued an apology along with several commitments aimed at improving the situation.
The first response from Gamescom regarding the thefts at various indie booths was disappointing. Instead of offering support and compensation, it leaned towards victim-blaming and suggested additional security measures. The latest statement, however, adopts a more apologetic tone, promising a “dedicated review of security for indie exhibitors” and plans for a developer roundtable to gather feedback.
“Our initial response missed the mark and failed to convey the empathy that those affected deserved. We sincerely apologize,” Gamescom stated. “A theft like this goes beyond just material loss… To everyone impacted: we recognize the toll this has taken on you, and we should have acknowledged that from the outset. We have already started conversations with those affected — discussing the theft, its repercussions, and, most importantly, listening.”
Despite the apology, many commenters remain dissatisfied with the organization. The initial thefts and the lack of a proactive response have likely tarnished some fans’ perceptions of Gamescom.
This sentiment is understandable. While Gamescom has admitted its shortcomings in the initial response, it still feels insufficient. As highlighted in their own statement, the indie developers affected didn’t just lose hardware and funds; they also lost access to valuable game builds and the opportunity to showcase their work to a large audience. Although promising steps have been outlined, they don’t fully compensate for the events of Gamescom 2026.
For instance, it appears that Gamescom will not be providing any compensation to the impacted developers. It’s crucial that further actions are taken to investigate the thefts and identify those responsible, ensuring that the renewed security measures effectively prevent similar issues in the future.
