GameStop proposes $56 billion acquisition of eBay to establish a serious rival to Amazon.
In a bold move to broaden its Pokémon card-trading empire, GameStop is eyeing a potential acquisition of eBay. From navigating the pandemic as a meme stock to banking on the Charizard Ultra Premium Collection, GameStop is on quite the journey.
On May 3, GameStop made a proposal to purchase eBay at $125.00 per share, totaling around $55.5 billion. With eBay’s stock closing at $104 on May 1, this offer represents a 20% premium per share. The deal would be split evenly between cash and stock, as outlined by GameStop’s CEO Ryan Cohen in a letter to eBay’s Board of Directors.
Cohen noted that GameStop already holds a 5% economic stake in eBay. He highlighted the company’s impressive turnaround from a $381 million net loss in 2021 to a $418 million net income. If the bid goes through, he believes GameStop’s approximately 1,600 U.S. locations could provide eBay with a robust network for authentication, intake, fulfillment, and live commerce. Cohen has also expressed interest in becoming the CEO of the merged entities.
In a recent interview, Cohen stated his ambition to transform eBay into a serious competitor to Amazon. He indicated that if eBay’s Board is not receptive to his vision, he is prepared to engage in a proxy fight. As of now, eBay has not publicly responded to the offer.
This unsolicited bid from GameStop might raise eyebrows, especially considering eBay’s market value is estimated at $46 billion compared to GameStop’s $12 billion. However, given GameStop’s history of financial volatility, particularly during the 2021 meme-stock frenzy when Reddit users rallied to save the company, this offer shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. Cohen is known for making bold moves and shaking up the market, so this acquisition attempt could be more than just a pipe dream.
