Gears of War: E-Day Deserves a Stunning Photo Mode
Gears of War: E-Day is an absolutely stunning game. In fact, it’s so visually impressive that it really deserves a photo mode.
Historically, the Gears series has never included this feature, and The Coalition’s latest installment continues that trend. It’s a missed opportunity, especially since this Xbox exclusive is likely one of the best-looking games of 2026.
The earlier Gears titles were often characterized by a dull palette of greys and browns typical of the Xbox 360 era. However, things improved during the Xbox One generation, with more vibrant environments and breathtaking skyboxes in Gears 4 and 5.
Now, Gears of War: E-Day, the first new release since the launch of the Xbox Series X/S, fully utilizes Unreal Engine 5 to bring a vibrant Gears city to life at the start of the Locust war. The result is an urban playground filled with intricate architectural details and stunning lighting effects that I wish I could capture with an in-game camera.
But it’s not all about the dark, gothic atmosphere mixed with post-war industrial settings; Gears of War: E-Day also shines in natural environments. A memorable segment in the woods at night showcases how beautifully the moonlight reflects off the leaves and tree bark, making me want to hit the screen capture button on my Xbox controller repeatedly.
Equally impressive is how well it performs on my Series S. While the resolution is lower and I’ve encountered some noticeable frame rate drops at times, Gears of War: E-Day still looks fantastic on my budget TV connected to the $300 console I bought nearly six years ago. As with most games, though, screenshots don’t quite capture the magic of the real-time experience.
A photo mode would not only provide players with additional settings to enhance their snapshots but also eliminate the hassle of adjusting the HUD or trying to snap images amidst the ambient dialogue. Here’s hoping The Coalition considers adding this feature along with some of the other missing elements in the future.
