Gears of War: E-Day focuses on a single city, offering a vibrant backdrop for storytelling and an ideal setting for thrilling cover-based combat.
Gears of War: E-Day’s creative director, Matt Searcy, has revealed that the game will unfold within a single city.
Instead of continuing the story from Gears 5, The Coalition has opted for a prequel that dives into Emergence Day through the eyes of Marcus and Dom.
In an exclusive chat, Searcy elaborated on the choice to make E-Day a more focused experience compared to the expansive Gears 5. He stated, “The story of Emergence Day is really about what happened to the people of Sera. It was a massive, worldwide event, and we wanted players to feel the impact, so we set the whole game in a single city called Kalona.”
The selection of Kalona is significant to the COG, as it honors one of its founders, Roman Kalona. “Our story unfolds over consecutive days, allowing players to connect deeply with the city,” he noted, adding, “We want them to feel the loss of what was here: the history, the people, and the lives they were living.”
Searcy described Kalona as “a rich environment to tell a great story,” emphasizing that a city setting enhances gameplay as “it’s the best playground for an intense cover-based shooter like Gears.”
While details on Gears of War: E-Day have been sparse since its announcement, it is still slated for release in 2026 on Xbox and PC, so fans can look forward to more information soon.
