George R.R. Martin’s recent update brings disappointing news for fans.
Whenever the prolific fantasy author updates his blog, fans around the globe hold their breath in anticipation. Could this be the moment he finally reveals progress on the next chapter of A Song of Ice and Fire, the highly awaited The Winds of Winter? Or will he once again share the latest drama surrounding his TV adaptations, as he did with House of the Dragon?
In his most recent blog entry, dated August 3, he does mention a TV adaptation, but it’s not the one many might expect. The reality of this update is somewhat underwhelming. He notes that while his blog has seen updates throughout 2026, the last post he personally authored was on February 19, with subsequent entries crafted by his “mighty minions.” Despite their help, he admits he continues to fall further behind.
The remainder of his blog post features him reflecting on the past year, sharing both candid thoughts and small joys. He discusses turning 77 and the unique challenges that come with aging. He also touches on the loss of friends, his struggles with sadness and depression, and expresses concern that “the worst may be yet to come,” which is understandably troubling for his fans.
While there was no major news in this update, he did highlight one of his adaptations towards the end of the post.
“One highlight you may already know,” he writes. “Emmy finalists for 2026 have been announced, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms nabbed nine nominations — yes, 9, not damn [sic] — including the prestigious Best Drama. The awards ceremony will take place on Monday, September 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. I hope to attend… but that depends on… well, on a lot of things.”
His enthusiasm for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected, given his close collaboration with the showrunner as an executive producer and writer. It seems his positive outlook stems from both the show’s quality and its faithful adaptation of the Dunk and Egg stories, with only minor changes.
Interestingly, he did not mention House of the Dragon, despite its final episode airing this Sunday. Previously, he has criticized the adaptation of his Fire & Blood pseudo-historical book for not aligning with his vision. His original post, titled “Beware the Butterflies,” where he promised to discuss “everything that’s gone wrong” with the adaptation, has since been removed. Even years later, fans still recall his pointed critiques aimed at the show’s showrunner, making it unsurprising that he chose not to reference it in his latest update.
In other Game of Thrones news, The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced the cast for George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones: The Mad King, a new stage play set to debut next week.
