Krafton, known for its diverse gaming ventures, surprised everyone during the latest PlayStation State of Play showcase with a jump scare. Krafton Montreal Studio unveiled Project Windless, an open-world action RPG that channels the spirit of Dynasty Warriors while drawing inspiration from Eastern fantasy, particularly the Korean novel series The Bird That Drinks Tears. And yes, the protagonist is a giant chicken man.

According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, Project Windless has been in development for “years” and is set to launch on PS5. The game takes place over a thousand years before the events of the novels, exploring a pivotal moment that the source material barely touches upon.

The image of the bird-man, wielding two swords against a backdrop of ordinary soldiers, is etched in my mind. Just when I thought I was enjoying a standard State of Play, chicken man made his entrance with a striking yellow beak, white feathers, and a dramatic slow-motion reveal.

These characters are known as Rekons, humanoid bird warriors celebrated for their impressive strength and size, though they have a notable fear of water.

“Instead of adapting the story you might know, we decided to go way back in time. We went over a thousand years before the events of the books and explored a turning point that the novels barely touch on,” the studio explains.

As a Rekon warrior, you’ll engage in epic battles against numerous fantasy races, taking on hordes of enemies in a “one-versus-many combat fantasy” that will resonate with Musou fans.

“As a Rekon warrior, you often fight dozens (sometimes hundreds) of enemies at once. To be clear, these crowds aren’t just visual noise,” the developers emphasize. “Brought to life through innovative mass technology, they move, flank, surround, and react to your actions, turning every battle into a living, unpredictable spectacle.”

While we’ve only seen a glimpse of this game, unconventional Eastern fantasy has already produced some fantastic action RPGs, so count me in for more updates on bird-man’s epic journey.

The developer behind Pokémon is set to release Beasts of Reincarnation in August, promising “one-person, one-dog action” for its first non-Nintendo title in years.
