Getting Your Hands on a Steam Deck Is Getting Tougher
If you woke up today thinking, “I’m finally going to grab a new Steam Deck!” you might have hit a snag. Valve’s handheld gaming powerhouse is currently sold out on their official store, and many are speculating whether this is just a temporary setback or a sign of more serious issues ahead.
Late last night, it became clear that the OLED versions of the Steam Deck were out of stock. Now, more than 12 hours later, they’re still unavailable on Valve’s site. The older LCD model is also sold out, which isn’t surprising since Valve announced back in 2025 that production of that version had ceased. However, the OLED models, available in 512 GB and 1 TB options, were expected to be in stock for a while. Reports from Japan indicate that the Steam Deck is also sold out there, but the store page suggests a restock by late February.
This situation has gamers and industry analysts worried that it could signal ongoing challenges as PC components and memory parts become increasingly scarce and pricey, largely due to persistent shortages exacerbated by AI hyperscalers. The trade tensions from previous administrations aren’t helping either. Social media is buzzing with memes poking fun at what some are calling the start of a new, costly era for gaming hardware.
One Reddit user lamented, “I was literally about to buy one today, even ready to go for the 1TB model, but that’s gone too.” Another mentioned that the Deck was briefly available on Newegg for $100 above the usual price, but that listing has since vanished.
Concerns are growing that when the Steam Deck becomes available again, it might come with a higher price tag as Valve grapples with securing the necessary components for production. Just last week, Valve announced delays for its upcoming Steam Machine and other hardware due to the ongoing parts shortage, which is a troubling sign for anyone hoping the new Steam Machine would be priced under $1,000.
If you’ve been considering picking up a Steam Deck, console, or any gaming tech like a GPU or new PC, it might be wise to act quickly. The next few weeks could see even more shortages or price hikes. Good luck out there; it looks like things are about to get challenging.
