Ghost of Yōtei Legends Has Launched Its Final Major Update

Ghost of Yōtei Legends, the multiplayer co-op experience from Sucker Punch Productions, made its debut on March 10 earlier this year, followed by its first significant content expansion, Raid mode, on April 10. However, this Raid update marks not just the first expansion but also the final one, as Sucker Punch has confirmed that no additional major updates are in the pipeline for the co-op mode.

Darren Bridges, Lead Designer at Sucker Punch, shared this news on May 15, stating, “The Raid update was our last major planned update for Legends. It finishes the story of the Yōtei Six in that mode. We’ve loved to see players engaging with it, continuing to play and enjoy it. It’s been great.”

Fans of Ghost of Yōtei Legends on the subreddit are understandably let down, especially since the multiplayer mode in Ghost of Tsushima received two major content updates, with support extending from its launch in October 2020 until August 2021.

This announcement comes as a surprise, particularly given that Ghost of Yōtei performed well, selling 3.3 million units in its first month. With such strong sales and the success of Ghost of Tsushima’s Legends mode, which enjoyed nearly a year of updates, it raises questions about why Sucker Punch is stepping back from Ghost of Yōtei Legends so soon.

While Bridges suggests that the Raid mode update serves as a natural conclusion to the story of Ghost of Yōtei Legends, it’s hard to believe that Sony wouldn’t want Sucker Punch to continue delivering new content if it were financially viable. This decision may be more reflective of Sony’s recent shift away from live-service games.

Despite the upcoming Marathon, Sony has been scaling back its live-service initiatives over the past year. Even CFO Lin Tao acknowledged that the company’s live-service strategy was “not entirely going smoothly” last year, hinting that this might be less about Ghost of Yōtei and more about potential future plans for Sucker Punch that focus on single-player experiences.
