Ghost Recon hints at 25th anniversary surprises amid ongoing leaks
As is customary, Ubisoft is responding to leaks about its upcoming games. The company has informed fans to anticipate new announcements regarding the Ghost Recon franchise next month, coinciding with the series’ 25th anniversary. This news arrives on the same day that leaks have surfaced, hinting at what Ubisoft plans to reveal.
On Monday, the official Ghost Recon X account made its first update in five months to address the leaks.
“We know some of you saw some updates,” the post states, “We’ll have more to say on the 6th of August when we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Ghost Recon. Intel coming soon.” Prior to this announcement, it was reported that a definitive edition of 2017’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with leaks suggesting it will feature a new mission.
The last installment in the Ghost Recon series was 2019’s Breakpoint. Many fans viewed it as a regression from Wildlands, although the game has benefited from numerous post-launch updates that have improved its overall experience. Ubisoft initially aimed for the next entry to be a large free-to-play battle royale-inspired title called Frontline. However, following significant backlash to the game’s reveal trailer and closed beta, Ubisoft announced in 2022 that development on Frontline had been canceled.
Since the cancellation of Frontline, there has been no official update on a new Ghost Recon title. Nevertheless, numerous leaks and rumors have circulated regarding Ubisoft’s plans. Reports suggest that the next game is codenamed Project OVR and has faced troubled development for several years. Leaks indicate that Project OVR will shift away from the open-world looter-shooter format of Wildlands and Breakpoint, returning to the series’ roots as a more tactical shooter. Additionally, the game is expected to adopt a first-person perspective. Ubisoft has been undergoing significant restructuring in recent years, leading to studio closures, project cancellations, and multiple rounds of layoffs.
