After decades of mixed sequels and remakes, the Texas Chain Saw Massacre may finally be in capable hands. With A24 set to distribute a TV reboot of the classic 1974 slasher, producer Glen Powell assures fans that the team is dedicated to honoring the horror franchise’s legacy.

“I’m realizing I’m in a position where the things I truly love, properties I care about… Texas Chain Saw is one of the most brilliant horror films,” Powell shared while promoting his upcoming comedy-thriller. “It defined the genre and is such a part of that era. I feel that A24 is a place that’s really creating something special, acting as a custodian of quality. We’ve had great discussions with the rights holders…

“J.T. Mollner and other creatives involved are incredibly passionate about this project. They have a strong vision, and everyone is committed to protecting something like this – I care about it, everyone cares about it – and I know we’re going to create something really special. It was a long journey to get here, but I’m feeling very optimistic about what’s ahead.”

When asked if he would appear in the TV adaptation or the separate movie announced simultaneously, Powell replied: “You never know. I’m known for wearing masks, between Chad Powers and Leatherface… But I think this is primarily for Barnstorm to produce, though I’ll definitely be very involved.”

Directed by Tobe Hooper, who co-wrote the script with Kim Henkel, the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre follows a group of young adults who stumble upon a family of violent, weapon-wielding cannibals. Initially receiving mixed reviews, the film became a box-office hit, grossing over $30 million worldwide against its modest $140,000 budget.

Over the years, it has spawned eight sequels, including the 1995 black comedy The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, two prequels, and a sequel set 50 years after the original film.

It seems unlikely that Powell’s TV show will be a straightforward remake, especially with Henkel hinting at “an epic tale lurking in the Chainsaw backstory” and Mollner, the director, previously stating he views the project as “a fresh way in” to the saga.
