God of War Laufey Set for 2027 Release with Physical Disc Version Confirmed
When is God of War: Laufey set to launch? The exact date remains a mystery, but we do know it will be available on disc. This indicates a release is expected before Sony phases out physical games on PlayStation by 2028.
A disc version of God of War: Laufey was confirmed on social media today amidst the ongoing discussions about Sony’s shift away from physical media. Santa Monica Studio is gearing up for a panel featuring the game’s developers at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, where cast members will join Game Director Ariel Lawrence, with Head of Creative Cory Barlog moderating the session.
To address potential backlash from fans regarding the move away from physical copies, Santa Monica Studio reassured followers with a post stating, “We can confirm God of War: Laufey will be available on disc.”
What did you say to Sony when you learned they would limit your future projects to being mere rentals?
What was your response when they indicated that the voices of your fans no longer mattered?
Your previous title saw impressive physical sales. Are you prepared for a decline?
Unlike many recent posts from PlayStation-related accounts, the comments here were largely positive. One user speculated, “The last SMS Physical Release,” calling it “The End of an Era.”
There’s still much uncertainty surrounding the transition away from physical media for PlayStation. While Sony has announced that no new discs will be produced starting January 2028, existing PS5 games can still have physical copies printed.
A significant question remains: will these PS5 discs be playable on the PS6 through an optional optical drive attachment, or will collectors of physical games find themselves out of luck?
On the other side of the console landscape, Microsoft is reportedly testing a method to digitize physical Xbox game libraries ahead of Project Helix, allowing users to receive digital licenses after playing a disc on their Xbox Series X/S. So far, there’s been no indication that Sony is pursuing similar solutions.
