God of War TV Series Reveals Unexpected Ragnarök Veteran as Kratos
A new era for the God of War franchise is on the horizon. Amazon’s Prime Video has announced that Ryan Hurst, known for his roles in popular series, will take on the role of Kratos in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic PlayStation game. This adaptation has already been greenlit for two seasons.
Fans of God of War will recognize Hurst from his portrayal of Thor in 2022’s God of War Ragnarök, a performance that earned him a BAFTA Award nomination.
As of now, the casting for other key characters like Atreus, Mimir, and Freya remains under wraps.
Christopher Judge, who brought the current iteration of Kratos to life in 2018 with the franchise’s soft reboot, previously voiced the character, taking over from Terrence “T.C.” Carson, who voiced Kratos during the earlier Greek saga.
According to Prime Video, Kratos is described as follows:
The central figure of the franchise, Kratos is a Spartan by birth and a god by nature. Raised in a warrior culture, he commanded armies for his homeland until a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, cost him his soul in exchange for victory in battle. Over ten successful games, Kratos has defeated mortals, creatures, and gods, becoming an iconic character known for his stoic demeanor, unmatched combat prowess, and tragic backstory. In the live-action series, his journey will closely mirror the last two games as he navigates a new challenge: his ten-year-old son, Atreus. This father-son relationship marks a new chapter in the legendary saga and will be the emotional core of the show.
The series will adapt the Norse-era storyline, where Kratos and Atreus confront the death of Faye—Kratos’ second wife and Atreus’ mother—as they embark on a quest to fulfill her last wish: to spread her ashes from the highest peak of the nine realms. While Kratos struggles with his tumultuous past as a god, he keeps it hidden from Atreus, leading them into conflict with the Norse pantheon.
Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on acclaimed series, will serve as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer for God of War. Veteran director Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes of this action-adventure series, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
God of War is expected to premiere on Prime Video in 2027.
