God of War’s Greek trilogy is being remade, and a new 2D prequel is available now.
During February’s PlayStation State of Play, it was announced that the original God of War trilogy is set to receive a remake. Alongside this exciting news, a brand-new 2D entry in the series, titled God of War: Son of Sparta, has been released.
The God of War franchise took center stage during the State of Play event, closing out the stream with a bang. Sony confirmed that the first three games in the series are being remade, although we only got a logo reveal and no gameplay footage. The project is still in its “early stages” of development, so don’t expect a release anytime soon.
In contrast, God of War: Son of Sparta made a surprise appearance and launched on the same day. Developed by Mega Cat Studios, this 2D game serves as a prequel, diving into Kratos’ early life. At the end of 2018’s God of War, Kratos shares a touching story about his Spartan friend Atreus, who ultimately inspires his son’s name. This new adventure is likely to delve deeper into their friendship. Son of Sparta features fast-paced 2D combat and includes narration from TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos. The standard edition is available for $30, while a digital deluxe edition can be purchased for $40.
Both projects have been the subject of speculation for months. Rumors about a trilogy remaster have been circulating for two years, and whispers of a 2D God of War game date back to last March.
The God of War remake trilogy is currently in development, and God of War: Son of Sparta is now available on PlayStation 5.
