Godzilla Makes a Comeback in Minus Zero’s Thrilling Debut Trailer

Somehow, Godzilla has made his return. The first full trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero has just dropped, and it’s packed with excitement. This direct sequel to Takashi Yamazaki’s Oscar-winning 2023 Godzilla reboot is set to continue the story two years after Minus One, as Japan grapples with the aftermath of World War II.

“We didn’t finish the job like we thought,” remarks Kenji Noda (Hidetaka Yoshioka), a former Naval weapons engineer who played a key role in devising the explosive decompression attack against Godzilla in the last film. Despite what seemed like a definitive defeat, the iconic monster is back, wreaking havoc once again. In response, the nation is forming a new task force. “There is no third time,” a subtitle ominously states. “Everything ends here.” It appears that Minus Zero is being positioned as the final entry in the “Minus” series, though only time will tell if that holds true.

The trailer brings back familiar faces, including Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) and Noriko (Minami Hamabe), the leads from the previous installment. For those needing a refresher, Shikishima was a would-be kamikaze pilot fighting for survival, while Noriko was a single mother turned thief, both dealing with their own psychological scars.

Godzilla Minus Zero will be the first Japanese film shot for IMAX, and the trailer showcases this with a shift to a 1:43:1 aspect ratio. We see an aerial battle as Shikishima returns to the cockpit, along with a surprising moment of Godzilla plummeting from the sky as Noda declares, “This isn’t Godzilla we are talking about.” Is this the same Godzilla from the last film? Will another kaiju rise to challenge the King of the Monsters? We’ll find out when the film hits theaters on November 6.

Godzilla Minus Zero and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire exist in separate canonical universes and are produced by different companies. Godzilla Minus One marked the 33rd Japanese-produced Godzilla film from Toho, the original rights holder of the franchise. Meanwhile, Legendary Pictures holds the licensing rights for its own Godzilla films, which form the “Monsterverse,” including Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island, and the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters TV series.

Legendary Pictures is also working on Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, the sequel to 2024’s New Empire. The next installment in Legendary’s Monsterverse is set to release on March 26, 2027.

The countdown to Takashi Yamazaki’s next film is on!
