Godzilla Returns to the Big Screen This Spring
We won’t see a new Godzilla movie until November, when director Takashi Yamazaki brings us Godzilla Minus Zero. But while we wait, Alamo Drafthouse is stepping up to quench our kaiju thirst. Starting in April, they’re launching TohoScope, a special collaboration with the studio behind the iconic monster.
Kicking things off, Alamo theaters will screen the 1975 classic Terror of Mechagodzilla, followed by 1971’s Godzilla vs. Hedorah in May and 1989’s Godzilla vs. Biollante in June. And there’s even more! Alamo promises that these events are more than just screenings; they’re immersive monster experiences featuring custom menus, rare theatrical showings, and collectible items that fans will want to grab like a terrified civilian.
Expect special menu offerings like Godzilla Punch and Blue Fire cocktails, along with Monster Fries and Boneless King Wings. Each screening will also provide a chance to snag exclusive merchandise, including T-shirts, a Hedorah pint glass, and kaiju-themed popcorn buckets.
As noted, the name TohoScope refers to the aspect ratio used by Toho during its Shōwa era (1954-1975), a time known for its campy charm and Godzilla’s portrayal as Earth’s protector rather than its destroyer. However, the lineup of films will go beyond just those classic kaiju flicks, leaving the final movie in this series open to a wide range of Toho’s offerings.
