GOG Under Fire for Utilizing AI-Generated Art
The digital gaming platform Good Old Games has recently found itself in hot water for utilizing AI-generated artwork. This decision has sparked considerable backlash, particularly from an artist affiliated with the company.
As reported, a Reddit user discovered what appeared to be AI-generated art promoting a sale for 2026 on GOG. A notable detail that raised eyebrows was a SNES-like console in the image that appeared to be melting, a clear sign of AI involvement. GOG users quickly took to forums to express their disappointment, especially given the company’s stated commitment to preserving art and supporting creators.
In response to the uproar, a GOG forum user known as KosmicznaPluskwa, who identifies as a graphic artist at the company, shared a detailed post on January 26. While they clarified that they do not represent GOG officially, KosmicznaPluskwa confirmed that the controversial image was indeed created entirely with AI tools, which they found disheartening.
“OK, so to clear the air – current sale banner is fully AI. Not my work,” KosmicznaPluskwa stated. “This is all I can say on this. My team is much smaller now than it used to be, and the requirements for the role are completely different than it used to be.”
Attempts to reach GOG for further comment on the situation went unanswered.
In their forum post, KosmicznaPluskwa lamented the prevalence of AI art in the industry, expressing sadness over its widespread acceptance.
“It’s just miserable to think about how surrounded and how ever-present it all is now,” they remarked.
They pondered the broader implications for humanity, acknowledging that while AI may not obliterate art entirely, its ubiquity will undoubtedly have an impact. “Maybe it doesn’t matter some store put out sloppy work on a promo banner – in the end, everyone is just there to buy the product – but I know I enjoy seeing cool new artworks out there when I’m out to buy new products as well. When I buy a new cool figure, I like to keep the box around if it’s pretty – this is kind of the same, but on a digital level. More cool art to see on top of buying art (video games in our case here) is always more cool art in the world and this is what I’m happy to have. So with everyone also feeling strongly in this thread – I’m with you. And continue speaking up – in the face of a future we don’t like to see, complacency is not the way.”
