Golden Axe is set to make a comeback in 2026, inspired by The Legend of Vox Machina.

After the success of the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog films, it seems only fitting that Sega’s next adaptation is the classic Golden Axe, the beloved fantasy beat-’em-up from the late ’80s. The upcoming Golden Axe TV series appears to embrace a similar lighthearted tone as Sonic, as seen in the first trailer, and aims to attract fans of The Legend of Vox Machina.

On Thursday, fans of retro Sega games got a glimpse of what to expect from this comedic take on Golden Axe. The animated series’ trailer is packed with self-referential humor and intense action, featuring some deep cuts from the franchise, including Golden Axe 3’s humanoid black panther, Chronos “Evil” Lait. Iconic characters like Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, Gilius Thunderhead, and Death Adder also make appearances.

(For those curious, the “purple mutant thingies” are known as Chicken Legs or Chicken Stingers.)

Here’s the official description of the new Golden Axe series:

Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they come together to rescue Yuria from the persistent evil giant, Death Adder. Their mission is complicated by the presence of Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and ill-prepared adventurer whose aspirations of heroism far exceed his skills. Despite their differences, they must collaborate to finally put an end to Death Adder.

The cast of Golden Axe includes Matthew Rhys as Gilius Thunderhead, portrayed as “a grumpy battle dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene and a chip on his shoulder”; Lisa Gilroy as the sorceress Tyris Flare; Liam McIntyre as the barbarian warrior Ax Battler; and Carl Tart as Chronos “Evil” Lait, described as an “uncomfortably cheesy humanoid panther.” New to the Golden Axe universe is a character played by Danny Pudi, named Hampton Squib, who is characterized as “a naive, inexperienced first-time adventurer who has dreamt of questing his entire life.”

Golden Axe is set to premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 16, exclusively on Paramount Plus, with all 10 episodes of the animated series available to binge at launch.
