Google Cloud Executive Joins Microsoft as New Security Lead
Microsoft has appointed a new head of security. Hayete Gallot, who transitioned to Google Cloud as president of customer experience in October 2024, is making her return to Microsoft as the executive vice president of security, directly reporting to CEO Satya Nadella.
This shift means that Charlie Bell, who previously led Microsoft’s security efforts, will be stepping into a new position within the company. Nadella mentioned in an internal memo, “I’ve also asked Charlie Bell to take on a new role focused on engineering quality, reporting to me. Charlie and I have been planning this transition for some time, given his desire to move from being an org leader to being an IC engineer.”
Bell has dedicated nearly five years to overseeing Microsoft’s security, compliance, and identity teams. The company has faced significant challenges in security recently, following a series of high-profile breaches. A critical report from the Cyber Safety Review Board in 2024 highlighted that “Microsoft’s security culture was inadequate and requires an overhaul.”
In response to these challenges, Microsoft initiated its largest security transformation just months before the report was released, prompted by a breach where Chinese hackers accessed US government emails via a Microsoft Cloud vulnerability. The Secure Future Initiative (SFI) aims to enhance Microsoft’s security posture and prevent future incidents that could allow nation-state attackers to target the company’s senior leadership. Microsoft is actively working to restore trust in its cybersecurity measures.
Gallot will now lead the ongoing efforts of the SFI, ensuring that security remains a top priority as Microsoft embraces the AI era. With nearly 16 years of experience at Microsoft in various senior leadership roles across engineering and sales, she brings a valuable perspective. Nadella noted, “She brings an ethos that combines product building with value realization for customers, which is critical right now.”
