Google Gemini’s Watermarks Can Now Be Disabled

Google has introduced a feature that allows users to remove visible watermarks from images, videos, and music created with its AI tools. With this update, you can disable the new “Media watermark” option in Gemini and the AI video generator, Flow.

When this setting is turned off, the “sparkle” watermark that typically appears in the bottom-right corner of content generated using the Nano Banana and Omni models will be removed. However, even with visible watermarks being optional, AI-generated content will still include invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata embedded in the background. According to Josh Woodward, vice president of Google Labs, Gemini, and AI Studio, this means you can verify whether a piece of content is AI-generated by querying Gemini or Search.

While this change may make it harder to quickly identify AI-generated images or videos, many users have already been removing visible watermarks. Other AI image generators, such as those from OpenAI and Meta, also do not use visible watermarks. OpenAI relies on SynthID and C2PA for indicating AI generation, while Meta has introduced its own Content Seal standard. Additionally, Anthropic has announced that it will apply invisible watermarks to both AI-generated text and images.

Google also plans to extend this new watermark setting to Search, but it won’t be available in regions that mandate visible watermarks.
