Google Introduces Tool to Locate and Remove Your ID from Search Results

Google is enhancing its suite of tools designed to help you manage sensitive information and nonconsensual images in search results. Recently announced, the “results about you” tool now allows you to remove personal details like your driver’s license, passport, Social Security number, phone number, and address from search results.

When you input your information into this tool, Google will display search results that include your data and provide an option to request its removal. The company assures users that the information entered is safeguarded with “advanced encryption.” You can also opt to receive alerts when new search results featuring your personal data are detected, although it’s important to note that this tool does not eliminate your information from the web entirely. This update is set to roll out in the US soon, with plans for broader availability in other regions.

Additionally, Google is taking steps to combat the distribution of nonconsensual explicit images. You can now request the removal of an image by clicking the three dots at the top of the picture, selecting “remove results,” and choosing the option that states, “It shows a sexual image of me.” The updated tool also allows for the removal of multiple images simultaneously and offers protections that will “proactively filter out” similar explicit results in the future. This feature will be available in “most countries” shortly.
