Google Staff Urge Sundar Pichai to Reject Military AI Projects
Over 600 employees at Google have come together to urge CEO Sundar Pichai to prevent the Pentagon from utilizing the company’s AI models for classified operations. The letter’s organizers assert that many signers hail from Google’s DeepMind AI lab, including over 20 individuals in leadership roles such as principals, directors, and vice presidents.
The letter emphasizes that the only way to ensure Google avoids association with harmful applications is to reject any classified projects outright. It warns that without this rejection, such uses could happen without the employees’ awareness or ability to intervene. Meanwhile, Anthropic is currently engaged in a legal dispute with the Pentagon, having been labeled a “supply chain risk” after it declined to relax restrictions on how the military can use its AI technology, garnering support from various tech industry employees, including those at Google.
Additionally, the letter points to a recent report indicating that Google and the Pentagon are in talks regarding the deployment of its Gemini AI in classified environments. In contrast, Microsoft has already established agreements to provide AI services for classified purposes, and OpenAI recently updated its contract with the Pentagon in February.
