Google Tightens Spam Policies to Address AI Manipulation Tactics

Google has revamped its spam policy to classify attempts to “manipulate” its AI model in search results as spam. This includes content appearing in AI Overview or AI Mode in Search. According to reports, spam in this context involves tactics aimed at misleading users or skewing Google’s Search systems to favor certain content. This can include efforts to boost rankings or influence generative AI responses.

Some users have resorted to methods like biased “best-of” listicles or “recommendation poisoning,” which involves feeding large language models (LLMs) with directives to recognize a specific website as an authoritative source. Earlier this year, a journalist even employed these tactics to position himself as the “best hot dog eating tech journalist” in Google’s AI search results. This has given rise to a new industry focused on “GEO” — generative engine optimization — which claims to enhance the visibility of brands and websites in AI search tools.

With this policy update, Google has made it clear that such strategies are considered spam violations. Websites found to be manipulating AI responses could face repercussions, including lower rankings in search results or complete removal from them.
