It would be great if The Ring Collection came with that striking steelbook case. The design mimics the grainy, static-filled visuals of the VHS tape from the film, featuring Samara in front of the well. Inside, you’ll find art of Samara in a stark room, while the slipcase captures the moment when the tape abruptly cuts to black. The Ring was pivotal in launching a new era of horror films in the early 2000s. The first installment, a 2002 remake of the 1998 Japanese original directed by Gore Verbinski, set the tone for the franchise. It’s a product of its time, revolving around a haunted VHS tape filled with disturbing imagery, a chilling phone call predicting your demise, and a gruesome fate awaiting you seven days later.

Ringu and its sequel, Spiral, actually premiered on the same day. While Ringu was a massive success, Spiral flopped, leading to its narrative being overshadowed by Ringu 2 the following year. Despite sharing a title number, Ringu and The Ring Two take different narrative approaches. However, they do share a director: Hideo Nakata, who helmed both Ringu and Ringu 2, also directed The Ring Two. The Japanese sequel picks up a month after the events of Ringu, while the 2000 film Ring 0 serves as a prequel. The Japanese films stay truer to Koji Suzuki’s novels, while the Hollywood adaptations borrow elements from the source material—Rings, for example, draws inspiration from the book Spiral—but diverge in many ways.

Suzuki’s book series consists of six novels, five of which are available in English. If you enjoy the films and haven’t yet explored the books, four of the novels along with the short story collection Birthday can be found for $14 or less in paperback. The stories in Birthday inspired Ringu 0, and reading the books before diving into the Japanese films could enhance your viewing experience.

The Ring Books in Paperback:
Ring: A Novel — $14
Spiral: A Novel — $11.16 ($14)
Loop: A Novel — $13 ($14)
Birthday: Stories — $14
S: A Novel — $11.10 ($15)

Additionally, consider checking out some of Suzuki’s other works. His short story collection Dark Water is available in paperback for $13. Dark Water was adapted into a film by Ringu director Hideo Nakata, and you can find the Dark Water Special Edition on Blu-ray and DVD for $21, down from $35. Like Ringu, Dark Water also received a Hollywood remake featuring Jennifer Connelly and John C. Reilly. You might also want to grab his Shirley Jackson Award-winning novel Edge for $13.90. Other Suzuki novels translated into English include the romantic tales The Shining Sea and Paradise.
