Grammarly will cease AI-driven expert cloning without consent.

Superhuman has announced the discontinuation of Grammarly’s “expert review” AI feature, which claimed its editing suggestions were “inspired by” real writers, including various staff members.

“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to disable Expert Review as we work on reimagining the feature to enhance its usefulness for users while allowing experts genuine control over their representation—or the choice not to be represented at all,” stated Ailian Gan, Superhuman’s director of product management. “Feedback has shown us that we missed the mark, and we apologize for that. We will approach things differently moving forward.”

In response to earlier criticism, Superhuman had introduced an email inbox for writers to opt out of “expert review,” but now recognizes that this step was insufficient. CEO Shishir Mehrotra also issued an apology and shared the company’s vision on LinkedIn, expressing a desire to create a future where “experts can choose to participate, influence how their knowledge is presented, and manage their business model.”

Mehrotra explained, “Back in August, we launched a Grammarly agent called Expert Review. This agent utilized publicly available information from third-party LLMs to provide writing suggestions inspired by the work of influential voices. Recently, we received valid feedback from experts concerned that the agent misrepresented their perspectives. This kind of scrutiny is vital for improving our products, and we take it seriously. The agent was intended to help users discover relevant influential perspectives and scholarship while offering experts meaningful ways to connect with their audience. We acknowledge that we fell short in this regard. I want to apologize and assure you that we will rethink our approach.”

He continued, “After careful consideration, we’ve decided to disable Expert Review while we reimagine the feature to better serve users and give experts real control over their representation. We firmly believe in our mission to tackle the ‘last mile of AI’ by integrating AI directly into users’ workflows, presenting a significant opportunity for experts. For millions, Grammarly serves as a reliable writing assistant—always available to help. We’re expanding this platform so anyone can create agents that function like Grammarly, evolving from a single assistant to a whole team. Picture your professor refining your essay, your sales leader enhancing a customer pitch, a thoughtful critic challenging your arguments, or a leading expert elevating your proposal. For experts, this is an opportunity to forge that same strong connection with users, similar to what Grammarly has achieved. In this future, experts will choose to engage, shape how their knowledge is presented, and control their business model. I’m excited about this vision and look forward to collaborating with experts who want to develop it with us.”
